Customers often tell the same story three times in their first month: once to the seller, once to the implementation team and once to their CSM. Each retelling loses detail, and the customer's confidence in the vendor drops a little with every repetition.
Define what must transfer
A good handoff carries a minimum dataset: the business problem and desired outcomes, the success criteria the customer will use, key stakeholders and their roles, commitments and scope agreed in the sales process, known risks, and the timeline expectations the customer holds. This data should be captured in the CRM as part of the opportunity, not in a separate document after signature.
Bring CS in earlier
For complex or strategic deals, involving CS before signature helps validate scope, set realistic expectations and build the relationship. It also gives CS the chance to flag fit concerns while there is still time to address them.
Make quality visible
- Score handoff completeness at the point of transfer
- Track early-life outcomes, such as time-to-value and 90-day health, by originating seller or team
- Review patterns jointly in Sales and CS leadership forums
When handoff quality is measured and discussed, it improves. When it is only complained about, it doesn't.
